Category: Completed Events 2019

The Audax UK season runs from 1st October to the end of September, so the local 2019 season started with the Hall at Wall events in October 2018, and finished with the Wall events in September 2019.

If you complete an event within the time limits and with a valid Brevet you will be included in the number of riders finished and you will usually appear on the full AUK results list for the event. You can order cloth badges and metal medals for the standard distances, and Grimpeur medals for AAA points, online from the Audax UK website.

Another Season Rolls On

The Celtic Coastal and Celtic Canter events from Wall wrapped up the Audax UK 2019 season nicely. Numbers were down a bit, probably due to the truly horrible weather the day before and the forecast light rain and strong winds. There may have been a little weather trepidation at the Départ but Chris Rayne’s parting shot of “it will be sunny later” certainly proved correct, even if early climbs took us up into the clouds. Winds never seemed quite from the direction expected as the road and the eddies turned back and forth along the cliffs and lanes, and riders enjoyed an exhilarating mix of headwind, cross wind and going well, along with some spectacular seascapes. Back at the Arrivée we were well rewarded with hot soup, sandwiches and cakes – many thanks to Chris and Liz for organizing and feeding us, and helpers Trevor and Simon at Wall and Peter (and Max) at The Apple Tree. Results are on the AUK site – linked and summarised below.

If you rode one of the Wall events paying the £3 insurance supplement for non-members you can take advantage of an offer from AUK membership to deduct £3 from your joining fee. More details are in the flyer here, or on the AUK site.

Don’t forget that in addition to the AUK membership benefits, if you’ve ridden one of the Audax Kernow events AUK membership also qualifies you to purchase an Audax Kernow jersey. Details of the jersey are in this post – we currently have a S, M, L and XL in the full zip short sleeve version, plus a limited selection of the long sleeved and 3/4 zip variants.  Email us using this link if you are interested.

Mines and Mineral Railways 30th June 2019

Over 100 riders on the Mines and Mineral Railways events enjoyed a day out up, down and along in mining country, most also taking advantage of the pasty lunch and cream tea.

There were 58 riders on the 67km on-road route who all finished well in time. The riders included several on e-bikes who successfully played off the power of legs and batteries to cover the terrain without running either flat.

An off-road route of similar distance is a much harder challenge and there were some DNFs but still 32 finishers, including one gritty rider who finished with 17 minutes in hand, then turned around to go back and urge on her flagging friend – she also made it, with 3 minutes to spare. Chapeaux all round, and many thanks to Simon and his helpers for the excellent organisation and feeding.

There are some pictures on the Falmouth Wheelers web site here and here. Results list are on the Audax UK site as linked below.

Devoran Events 12 May 2019

Another bit of luck with the weather, with all the riders enjoying a cool-ish but very sunny day.

First off were the Lizard and the Camel riders, on a slightly modified route (due to knee-deep chippings at White Cross) which took the recommended route distance up to 212km.

A very good field this year, including club groups from One and All Cycling and Wadebridge Coasters CC. Special kudos to the latter for virtually passing their collective front doors at well over half way before starting the return leg. There are some excellent pictures of their day on Facebook here and here.

The 110km Red River Blue Sea event was off next at 9:00. The route is a figure of eight giving the riders a scenic loop around West Penwith, and two bites of the cherry (or what you fancy) at Gwithian.

Finally the 56km Peter’s Point riders set off for a round trip to the Gwithian control. There was a good mix of riders of all ages, including several on electric bikes.

A few more pictures from the Départ here.

The first riders on the short route started to arrive back around lunchtime, soon interspersed with the fastest on the 100km route. The Randoneurs started to return in the early evening with everyone through by about half past seven – some relieved, some triumphant and all in very good spirits.

Congratulations to everyone who took part and made it such a pleasant day all round, and special thanks from the organiser to all the helpers on the day.
