Many Rivers to Cross

Sunday 21st April 2019
Starting from Penzance
Organiser Martyn Aldis

306km Brevet de Randonneur. A very substantial day out for the well‐prepared and self‐reliant randonneur. Crosses the rivers Fal, Fowey and Camel by ferries and bridges, large and small. A very rich variety of Cornish countryside, the extremes being the nearly flat downs of the Lizard and the heavily corrugated western flank of Bodmin Moor.

This is same route as 2018, brought back to the Easter weekend slot as a BRM to enable it to be used as a PBP qualifier.

Note that this is an “X-rated” event, which means there are no manned controls or specific facilities. You attach commercial or ATM receipts to your brevet card for timed controls, and post it to the organiser after the event. No on-the-line entries.

Looking forward

Two Audax Kernow events for April are now on the AUK Calendar.

The Falmouth Wheelers’ Cornish 100 and Bunny Hop rides will run on 14th April – a week before Easter this year, as Easter is so late.

The Penzance X-rated 200km and 300km events will run on the 21st – Easter Sunday. As 2019 is a Paris-Brest-Paris year they are running as BRM (Brevet de Randonneur Mondial) events and can be used as part of a PBP qualifying series.

I’ll be updating our own calender and Facebook page with these events sometime later this year, with others as they are calendared.

No Ed’s Mince Pie and Mulled Wine Audax this December to look forward to I’m afraid, but many years of a very special ride to look back on and celebrate. As far as I can ascertain, this ride started in December 2007, running first from Connor Downs before moving more recently to Carharrack,  and only missed one year (due to icy weather in 2011) in those 11 years. I’m sure everyone who has ever taken part will want to thank Eddie Angell and Wendy Wallis for all their past efforts and successes in warming parts other rides don’t reach.

Easter BRMs from Penzance

5 April, 2015
Starting from Penzance
Organiser Martyn Aldis

The Many Rivers to Cross and Four Hundreds 200 X-rated events have something of a history of attrition. Gales, deluges, heatwaves and hills have produced a fair proportion of DNSs and DNFs over the years. This year looked promising, with good weather forecast and the PBP qualification timetable probably contributing to a reasonable start list for events of this type, but illness and logistics still managed to reduce the starters to a total of ten hardy locals and two “furriners”.

Chapeau to all those who took part in these challenging rides.

2014 Mille Cymru

Not as well known as London-Edinburgh-London or Paris-Brest-Paris, but probably more challenging than either, the Mille Cymru is a 1000km+ ride that seems to cover most of Wales (the hilly bits). Chapeau to Trevor Stephens, who has let us have this ride report. Continue reading
