Lizard and the Camel

Sunday 26th May 2024
Starting from Perranwell Organiser Martyn Aldis

The event starts from the Perranwell Centre (also known as the Perran-ar-Worthal Village Memorial Hall).

The route has been planned with the first-time randonneur in mind. It provides more modest ascent than other 200s run in Cornwall but it is scenic in the literal sense. The route makes use the new Saints Trail from Perranporth to Goonhavern and the Camel Trail from Padstow to Bodmin.

Controls at Lizard Village, Gwithian and Padstow, plus 2 information controls.

Includes free refreshments at Perranwell and Gwithian, with shop and café opportunities at other controls and elsewhere on route.

Audax Kernow 2023 Season

A belated round-up of the events of 2023 and links to results.

After starting our season with the Falmouth events on the 2nd of April, next up were the 50km, 100km and 200km events from Perranwell on the 21st of May. All three rides were well supported and the weather was kind. Some nice photos of the Lizard and the Camel 200km from St Austell Wheelers and of Peter’s Point 50km from Newquay Cycling

The Mines and Mineral Railways on- and off-road events followed on the 18th of June, and again we were lucky with the weather. Pasties and cream teas went down well, and the off-roaders were no muddier than usual.

The final events of the season were the 200km and 300km events from Penzance on the 25th June. There was just one rider on the challenging Many Rivers to Cross 300km event, and although it was not run as a Paris-Brest-Paris qualifier this year, it nevertheless preserves its record: so far, every PBP entrant who’s completed this ride has also completed their PBP. Lucy Bufton finished both with little time to spare, and her account of her Many Rivers to Cross ride appears in the Winter 2023 edition of Arrivée, the AUK magazine.

The Audax UK site lists the validated finishers – links below. E-bike riders are not included in the official lists, but were welcome on all the Brevet Populaire rides and deserve full credit for meeting the different challenges involved.

Lizard and the Camel

Sunday 21st May 2023
Starting from Perranwell Organiser Martyn Aldis

The event starts from the Perranwell Centre (also known as the Perran-ar-Worthal Village Memorial Hall).

The route has been planned with the first-time randonneur in mind. It provides more modest ascent than other 200s run in Cornwall but it is scenic in the literal sense. The Camel Trail is used for a 21km section but this can be avoided on a rather lumpy all-tarmac alternative

Controls at Lizard Village, Gwithian and Padstow, plus 2 information controls.

Includes free refreshments at Perranwell and Gwithian, with shop and café opportunities at other controls and elsewhere on route.

Some Like it Hot

July saw the final events of the Audax Kernow 2022 calendar – links to the AUK results lists below.

The 200km and 300km events from Penzance on 3rd July offered plenty of climbing and other challenges. It was a surprisingly chilly start with some stiff winds despite the sun, but a glorious end to the day in the far West to reward the small band of hardy riders who took these on.

The following week things had hotted up and riders on the events from Perranwell on 10th July enjoyed – or suffered – wall-to-wall sunshine. Entrants included several people trying their first Audax or their first 200km, and also Geoff Sharpe from Devon, on his 300th Audax. Chapeaux all round.

If you’ve enjoyed riding local Audaxes you might want to consider joining Audax UK. Full details on the AUK site here. Note that you if you paid the non-member insurance of £3 for an Audax Kernow event you can have a one-off discount of £3 on your membership.
