Mines and Mineral Railways ON-road and OFF-road

28 June, 2015
Starting from Carharrack
Organiser Simon Jones

These two events explore Cornwall’s mining heritage in the ‘Copper Kingdom’ between the Channel and the Atlantic, with the optional extra of a pasty lunch and a cream tea.

The off-road event is a 40 mile ride using the old tramroads and bridleways that criss-cross mid Cornwall’s mining area. This route is 90% off road – mountain bike recommended. The on-road event is a similar distance over the same territory, but sticks to the tarmac of the lanes.

Order your choice of pasty and either rice pudding or scone with cream and jam with your entry.

Cornish take on Devil in Devon

25% Hill on Dartmoor DevilIt’s always a hell of a ride, the Dartmoor Devil. It’s the sting in the tail of the audax season. 104km sounds like a nice Sunday’s distance. What makes the difference is the 2,500 metres of climbing. Well, that’s just one of the differences. The wind and weather too nearly always play their parts, especially on the exposed bleakness of the high moor, as the ride takes its toll, the gloom gathers and the Devil unleashes all his secret machinations. Local Audax Events Update

An updated two-page flyer listing the events from July to December is available here to download. This now includes The Celtic Coastal and Celtic Canter events from  Connor Downs on 10 August, and also the Moor & Coast  on 8 June, which is one of four rides from Brentor, near Tavistock – at 200km it is long enough to take in roads in North Cornwall.

The next local event is Merlin’s Coast to Coast from Hewas Water on 15 June. Please support this new event organised by Probus Pedallers to raise funds for the Merlin Centre (Cornwall’s Multiple Sclerosis Centre).

Merlin’s Coast to Coast

It is now only 6 weeks to this new event starting from the Merlin MS Centre at Hewas Water near St Austell.  This event is to raise money for the Merlin MS Centre which is an outstanding charity supporting people with multiple sclerosis.  It is a source of great support both to people suffering with the condition and to their carers.  This ride therefore has a slightly higher than normal entry fee of £10 but participants are also invited to raise additional sponsorship money if they would like to do so.  A sponsorship form can be obtained by accessing the Merlin MS Centre’s own website at the following address:

http://www.merlinmscentre.org.uk/images/Sponsor_Form_for_web.pdf

Or alternatively by contacting Sarah Snell on (01726) 885536.

Refreshments will be available at the Merlin MS Centre at the end of the ride and a goody bag is also available, kindly donated by Clive Mitchell cycles.  Fred will be there at the Merlin Centre for the start of the ride to help with any minor glitches to bikes etc to ensure that things go smoothly on the day.  There will even be someone out there taking photos to commemorate the event.

Come and join us and bring the sunshine too if you can!!
