Ed’s Mince Pie and Mulled Wine – 4 December 2016
4 December, 2016
Starting from Caharrack Organiser Eddie Angell
Eddie’s ride is always a winter treat, and this year we were blessed with dry weather – and a keen wind to sharpen the appetite.
As usual, the ride was more or less fully booked. 77 riders made it to the start, and every one completed the ride with valid brevet – well done all of us!
Greed and good spirits tend to keep the pace lively on the way out to the control and this year we had the wind (mainly) helping us as well. We got a bit of buffeting on the tandem, so knew it would be essential to refuel well before the return.
As in previous years, huge thanks are due to Wendy for the warm welcome and legendary refreshments. The spread at the farm was imposing, varied and delicious as usual, with pasties, sausage rolls, scones and cakes all temptingly displayed. The collection for Parkinson’s raised £173.
The return, as far as the tandem was concerned, was a bit more leisurely to allow for digestion as well as a long climb into a headwind.
A second welcome back at the arivée from Eddie and from the kitchen, where Simon and Liz were serving mulled wine and mince pies – a happy end to the event and a fitting start to the festive season.
Thanks to Eddie for once again organizing a splendid ride, and to helpers Peter Hansen, Simon Jones, Liz Rayne and of course Wendy Wallis.

X-Rated Events, Penzance 5 June 2016
A belated post to add the links to the results for these events.
Congratulations to all the riders, especially those who took on the 2016 Many Rivers to Cross route, which offered extra explorations of Bodmin Moor due to the A30 crossing closures.

Celtic Coastal Audax 100k
And so to the end of a year of great riding, or rather I should say the start of another Audax season! I got back cycling in 2014 following a running career curtailed by injury. “ Get a bike Will, get a bike Will” said Cliff a work colleague and now fellow Audaxer, and after riding my first sportive (with Cliff) the Lands End 100 miler it was, “ride an Audax Will, the Dartmoor Devil is coming up….” I was surprised to find that 100 km could be harder than 100 miles, especially when accompanied by all those steel bike riders, but liked the ethos and connoisseur feel of the Audax scene.

The year is turning …
Another Audax season about to close – and the new one to start. Our first local events are the Celtic Coastal and Celtic Canter from Connor Downs on 23rd October.
I have added a GPX file for the Celtic Canter route, but note that you will have to change the extension (from .txt to .gpx) as this web site won’t accept a GPX file upload. The file is also available (with the correct extension) from the Facebook group here. There is also a downloadable poster you can use to advertise the events.
Update 18 October: GPS navigational files now available for the Celtic Coastal.
2016 was Audax UK’s 40th year, and there are some special commemorative badges to celebrate. We had a number of first-time and existing randonneurs this year who are entitled to the one on the left, and at least one local rider will be receiving the “40@40” award (that’s over 40 points – 4000km – in events of 200km or more).
Plenty to celebrate for Audax Kernow too. We’ve had some cracking events and most of the organizers have obviously been sacrificing appropriately to the weather gods. Lots of new riders and people extending their distances. We provided the Penzance control for the Kernow and South West 600 and our TLC was very much appreciated. And we now have a Facebook group to help everyone keep in touch.
