Some Like it Hot

July saw the final events of the Audax Kernow 2022 calendar – links to the AUK results lists below.

The 200km and 300km events from Penzance on 3rd July offered plenty of climbing and other challenges. It was a surprisingly chilly start with some stiff winds despite the sun, but a glorious end to the day in the far West to reward the small band of hardy riders who took these on.

The following week things had hotted up and riders on the events from Perranwell on 10th July enjoyed – or suffered – wall-to-wall sunshine. Entrants included several people trying their first Audax or their first 200km, and also Geoff Sharpe from Devon, on his 300th Audax. Chapeaux all round.

If you’ve enjoyed riding local Audaxes you might want to consider joining Audax UK. Full details on the AUK site here. Note that you if you paid the non-member insurance of £3 for an Audax Kernow event you can have a one-off discount of £3 on your membership.

The story so far

Here’s a quick review of the Audax Kernow events since our restart after Covid 19 restrictions, with links to some photos and to the Audax UK results lists which show riders with validated brevets.

First were the Falmouth Wheelers’ Bunny Hop and Cornish 100 events run in September 2021 and, with a variation of route, in April this year. Then in May we had the 100km Celtic Coastal run by new organiser Charlie Jarrell. Last week saw the return of the Mines and Minerals On-road and Off road events. All well attended and much enjoyed, in varying weather conditions.

Cream teaIf you are entering one of the Mines and Mineral Railways events don’t forget to order your pasty and cream tea. There’s a new system this year so you can do this from the AUK site along with your entry. If you’ve entered already and missed the spot, it’s not too late to add your food order – just use the Audax Kernow part of the AUK Store to choose your pasty and cream tea or pudding.
