Events from Devoran 17 May 2015

We saw a total of 71 riders leave Devoran on Sunday. Despite some of the usual suspects being away from home “The Granite and Serpentine Way” saw more riders listed than any year since 2008: ourselves on tandem, thirteen on geared solos and one on fixed wheel.  Navigational mistakes and Garmin-assisted sailing on past controls led to a rather high DNF count on “A Lizard Loop” but all twelve who started the “Carns and Killas” had their brevet cards in good order for the finish.

A 100 miler featuring a wide variety of classic Cornish scenery with long coastal stretches and views out to sea as well as sheltered lanes and the open plateau of the Lizard. This ride provides a very approachable step up to riding a hundred miles in Cornwall.

Start at the historic south coast mineral port of Devoran and ride to St Agnes beacon overlooking the Atlantic. Then ride two spectacular coastal sections encompassing the far West before a run down the Lizard and back.

Tea or coffee at the start, free refreshments at Towednack and the Lizard controls, commercial control at Little Pengelly Tea Room, and free refreshments at the finish.

The change of venue was blessed with particularly fine warm weather, and 65 riders took off from Devoran on the three very different routes, returning to Devoran for cakes and crumble, with custard hot or cold.

There is a “tongue in cheek” ride report on the Falmouth Wheeler’s web site, and some photos.

A new start and a revised route for this 100 miler featuring long coastal stretches with views out to sea as well as sheltered lanes. This year’s ride is just 4km longer than before but packs in more coastal variety and spares riders the old route’s final ascent to Carnon Downs. Main controls as before at Towednack, Little Pengelly Tea Room, and Lizard Village.

Tea and coffee at start. Refreshments at finish.
