The “no gels” Dorset Coast 200km

Old Harry's RocksIsn’t that the sound of gunfire in the distance?  But it is 6 am on a Sunday in the sleepy Isle of Purbeck and it is the day of the Dorset Coast.  After a hearty breakfast (including black pudding) the four of us ride off to the start in Wareham.  Mark and Jane are in their Willesden CC strips and Robin and I in our Audax Kernow colours.  Mark is in his usual early season good shape (which is quite visible). The Joys of Spring

If, as the Met Office have it, Spring starts on 1st March then the weather was running a little late this year. Several riders from Cornwall braved the torrential rain on 2nd March for the Exeter Wheelers’ Mad March Coasts and Quantocks event.  There is a good account of the ride including pictures of some local bretheren here.

Audax Kernow’s Spring makes a later and hopefully more Spring-like start with the Falmouth Wheelers’ events A Bunny Hop and A Cornish 100.

If you are looking to get some distance in before then, why not take part in CTC Cornwall’s Ride the Equinox for ShelterBox event on 23rd March (two days after the Spring Equinox). There are 25, 33 and 50 mile road rides from Devoran, and also two mainly off-road routes from Portreath – full details on the CTC Cornwall web site.

Local Audax events April to July 2014

Details of local events for April to July 2014 are now on the calendar.

This year sees a new event organised by Probus Pedallers to raise funds for the Merlin Centre (Cornwall’s Multiple Sclerosis Centre) at Hewas Water (Merlin’s Coast to Coast).

There are revised routes starting from Devoran for the events previously run from Carnon Downs (The Granite and Serpentine Way, A Lizard Loop and Carns and Killas), and  the “X-rated” 200km and 300km events from Penzance (Many Rivers to Cross and the Four Hundreds 200) are running in July this year instead of over the Easter weekend.

A two-page flyer listing the events is available here to download.

Here’s looking forward to some drier riding conditions and an excellent 2014 season!

Ed’s Mince Pie and Mulled Wine 50km 2013

This may only be a very short audax randonnée, but this is the one event that riders really look forward to in early December every year.  It is a pleasant prelude to the season when the bike otherwise gets neglected and we put on some unwanted extra pounds.
